Luke 22: 7 – 16 John 13 :1 – 17

In the 80′s it was dubbed the “Me Generation”, and presently this generation is called the “sense of entitlement”, what marks these generations, is the idea of servanthood is not a popular word. These two generations want to know whats in it for me, not for you.

Yet Jesus says that if you’re a leader, be a servant, and if you’re a follower, be a servant. With Christ, no position can or should hold you back from serving others. And Jesus does say, if you do serve, you and they are blessed – so much for the me generation or the age of entitlement.

Paul gives us a challenge to view our roles (whether we be the boss or the employee) from the vantage that we are serving Jesus first and our earthly realm second. It can have a dramatic affect in how we value our roles as well it lifts us up with a sense of dignity to the role of work.

Paul was a social revolutionary. He opposed his own people, the Jews, in order to follow Christ’s call to welcome all people into God’s redemption. However, as he was doing that, he also opposed the most powerful man in his society, Caesar, whose empire was causing brutality throughout the world to women, foreigners, and the poor.

Paul in this passage calls for the end of language and actions that perpetuate Caesar’s idolatrous way of life and look to the vision of a higher dignity of life in the image of the creator. Thus Paul says, “There is neither Jew nor Gentile, circumcised nor uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave nor free, but Christ is all in all.

The Beatles coined a song Revolution, and it was about the desire of people longing for some kind of change with the “establishment” or situations that they find offensive or threatening. God longs for His world to be radically different then the way man has identified it. So during Roman rule a letter is written to a young church with very subversive language, and it was countering the thought of the day, that NO, Caesar is not the firstborn of the gods, nor is he the reason all the good things are going on, rather its Jesus. What really becomes clear is that Jesus’ love is very compelling that He wants to rescue people from their own distorted way of living and find a life that lives according to the way we have been created. And when we find our true God calling, and we live it out in compassion, kindness and mercy there is a lot of joy in that lifestyle, then being selfish…. Listen below…

It was a cold winter’s day that Sunday. The parking lot to the church was filling up quickly. I noticed as I got out of my car fellow church members were whispering among themselves as they walked in the church.

As I got closer I saw a man leaned up against the wall outside the church. He was almost laying down as if he was asleep. He had on a long trench coat that was almost in shreds and a hat topped his head, pulled down so you could not see his face. He wore shoes that looked 30 years old, too small for his feet, with holes all over them, his toes stuck out. I assumed this man was homeless, and asleep, so I walked on by through the doors of the church.

We all fellow-shipped for a few minutes, and someone brought up the man laying outside. People snickered and gossiped but no one bothered to ask him to come in, including me. A few moments later church began.

We all waited for the Preacher to take his place and to give us the Word, when the doors to the church opened. In came the homeless man walking down the aisle with his head down. People gasped and whispered and made faces.
He made his way down the aisle and up onto the pulpit where he took off his hat and coat. My heart sank. There stood our preacher…he was the “homeless man.” No one said a word. The preacher took his Bible and laid it on his stand. “Folks, I don’t think I have to tell you what I am preaching about today.” Makes you think, doesn’t it.

We live in a world where we are all measured by what kind of success we produce, but in Gods Kingdom He is looking for those who are faithful with what God has entrusted to them. So when the end comes, god will look at how faithful you were with what He gave you, not wondering about how it garnished this or that. You see we have a God who is all about Love and not necessarily the bottom line. And when we capture that God wants us to serve out of Love and not of legalism, I have a funny idea that it might just create a lot of freedom in people and quite possibly a lot of creativity. hmmmm…
